In my last post on learning corners, I showed you our art corner. Today, I’m giving you a tour of our music corner. Step inside our living room and this is what you will find!
Here is our music corner located in our living room (in the adjacent corner from the art table). My husband’s electric guitars and my acoustic guitar hang on the wall. Since hanging them on the wall, my husband gets a lot more practice. The kids also love to pull them down and pick away!
Music Corner Tour
The white dresser I got at a garage sale for $5 and did a quick paint job with some paint we had on hand. It has been a great place to hide our music corner treasures!
On top of the dresser is our CD player along with a container for guitar picks/accessories. I often put a classical CD on after Circle Time while I prepare lunch. If you want to know some of our favorite music listening resources check out my post about homeschooling music.
Here is what you will find under the dresser. A basket filled with musical instruments for the kids to play and explore to their heart’s content. I even have my old “Tap-a-Tune” from childhood! This basket is pulled out on a daily basis!
Here is the view of the inside of the dresser (yes, I was too lazy to paint the inside!). Inside is husband’s amplifier (he drilled a hole in the back of the dresser to run his cord). On the left of the amplifier is our case of CDs and on the left are music books (piano, guitar, and Wee Sing books).
Just to the right of the dresser sits our parlor grand piano. Don’t be jealous-it is in need of a LOT of work! My husband and I are hoping to get some work done on the piano as soon as we have a proficient piano player in the home. For now, it is an impressive looking decoration that gets picked at occasionally. On top is a piano book for beginners, The Story of the Orchestra, hymnals, and a book about the composer Tchaikovsky. I like to display books on many different composers here.
While this is NOT in the music corner, this is how we teach music in our home. We have Children’s Music Journey, a computer software that teaches the kids basic music reading. My husband and I were turned off by the price of piano lessons and the time it would take to tote the kids there. For now, this is our solution. We hope it will give the kids a good introduction to the piano before we decide to invest in “real” piano lessons.
Our family favorites for teaching music…
You’ll also want to check out my post on Homeschooling Music for the Musically Challenged, but these are some of our family favorites.
The Story of the Orchestra We love this book and accompanying CD. It does a great job of introducing little ones to classical music, its instruments, and composers.
Beethoven’s Wig Series We have owned these CDs for awhile and they have been a real hit with all of us. They introduce children (and adults!) to classical music and composers in a very entertaining way. Hilarious lyrics are put to some of the most famous classical pieces with the name of the piece and composer often incorporated into the words. I can often name the tune and composer when I hear a classical piece!
The Story of…. (Series) We like to listen to these CDs as a way to learn about the famous composers and their lives. Each CD contains a story of the composer’s life with their compositions playing in the background. This is followed by a few selections of their most famous works. You really get to know the sound of a composer’s pieces after listening to them awhile.
Melissa and Doug Instrument Set We were lucky enough to find this second hand at a garage sale. It has provided lots of hours of exploration and play. As with all Melissa and Doug toys, it has held up very well.
