I’ve said it here before, but our family has been so blessed by our amazing group of friends! Several years ago, I uttered quiet prayers, that God would bring Godly friends into our lives. God has more than delivered on that prayer! Every year our little group of Catholic homeschooling families grows. God is beyond generous!
This group of families all are (how shall I say it?)…fruitful families, so there are plenty of little friends for our children. (What is that you say about homeschooled children not being well socialized? I can’t hear you over my children playing with all their friends!)
Several years ago, our homeschool group decided to perform a Nativity play as part of the Christmas season. I scoured the internet trying to arrange the perfect script for our group, but only came up empty handed. So I opened God’s Word and a hymnal and set to work developing the nativity play script our group has used with great success over the last four years.
Our group of nativity play performers has grown or shrunk from year to year depending on how many families participate in our co-op that particular school year. Eventually I made permanent changes to the script so it could be reworked to fit the size of our group with very little effort on my part.
What’s to love about this Nativity Play Script:
1.It is completely changeable to work with your group (no matter the age or size).
Every year, I can assign parts and lines in less than 5 minutes. Seriously. Who wants to spend their precious time reworking the same play every Advent? Not me.
2.Totally based on scripture.
The majority of the lines in this nativity play script come straight from scripture (both Old and New Testament). The performers won’t just be memorizing lines, they will be memorizing scripture!
3.Lets the nativity story stand on its own.
This nativity play script tells the story of Jesus and allows the audience to draw their own conclusions. There’s no cheesy commentary to muddle up the beauty of the birth of Christ.
You could make your own….but…
With some time and creativity, you could DIY your own nativity play script just like I did. However, as a busy mom of littles, if I could do it all over again, I would gladly have paid for a pre-made script to save myself the time, hassle, and stress it took to create this one,. At the time something like this play didn’t exist! It took me several hours to crank out the first draft of the script and since then I’ve put in a couple more hours editing it to make it easy to rework from year to year.
The Nativity Play Script:

Excerpt from the beginning of the Nativity Play Script:
(Note: In the pdf version, the narrator lines will be boxed in grey and seperated by paragraphs to indicate that they may be spoken by one or multiple people.)
(Narrator): God sent prophets to His people, Israel, to foretell the coming of a savior. The world was waiting. Isaiah the prophet said,“Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.”
O, Come Emmanuel (1st verse only)
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
(Narrator): And in the fullness of time God would send his son. God sent the angel Gabriel to a young virgin named Mary. He came to her and said…

No longer free? Many of you may have found this post from Pinterest with an image labeled “Free Nativity Play Script.” For the last several years, I have offered this script free of charge to subscribers. However, this resulted in many people subscribing that weren’t necessarily interested in email updates from me. To solve this problem, and to help pay for some of the time I give to this blog, I have changed the script to a pay-for product. I’m sure you will realize the price is still very low considering all the time you will save in not DIYing your own!
