I’ve been impatiently waiting for my little girl to be old enough to dress her as St. Lucia for St. Lucia’s feast day on December 13th. This is the year! I took some time to make her a felt crown, which in my very humble opinion turned out super cute.
The crown has already been used once for her All Saints’ Day costume and is in the queue for St. Lucia day when she and I will serve the boys homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast.
We’ll finish off the day sipping hot cocoa and driving around seeing the Christmas lights!
St. Lucia Crown Tutorial:
- elastic headband or piece of elastic sewn (at least 1/2″ in width) to make a circle
- green felt (Do a rough measurement around your child’s head and add a little for length. The piece should be about 5 inches wide.)
- a little red felt circles for berries.
- Lots of green felt “leaves” ( I used a couple different colors of green)
- 10 strips of white felt (mine were approximately 1.5″ wide by 7″ long)
- 5 sets of felt flames (1 large orange, 1 medium red, 1 small yellow)
- Batting
2. Pin the “leaves” along one edge of your felt strip and sew along the length making sure to secure each “leaf.” As you sew, place little berries randomly on leaves and secure as you stitch across.
3. Layer your “flame” pieces and sandwich them between two white felt strips-pin in place. Sew along the length of the white pieces, across the “flame-sandwich” and down the other side of your candle. (DO NOT sew across the short bottom.) Take some batting and using the blunt end of a pencil, shove it into the open end of the candle. This will help keep the candles upright.
4. Lay your green felt piece out with leaves pointed up. Take each candle and lay (flame side down) the bottom edge on the no-leaf side of the wreath with the candle laying across and pointing toward the leaf side. Pin each candle at equal lengths across green felt piece. Slide a pipe cleaner up each hollow candle (make sure to bend both ends of each pipe cleaner to prevent them from working their way out of the felt). Sew a U shape from bottom of the candle to midway across felt piece, over, and then back down.
5. Sandwich your headband or elastic piece inside of the felt piece and fold the felt piece over (leaves will be the front of the crown and candles should be inside the perimeter). Sew along the length of the bottom. (I did not sew the ends of the felt together to allow for head growth).
6. Cut the threads and you are DONE!
(Alternatively, you could make a crown from paper, but I wanted something a little more sturdy that would last for lots of All Saints’ and St. Lucia Days to come. This took me approximately 40 minutes to make, but I hope it lasts for quite a few years.)
Look at my cute little St. Lucia! Now if only I can get her to say “Lucia” instead of “Sophia” we’ll be all set!
Here is how we celebrate St. Lucia day:
- A detailed post: St. Lucia Day in Our Catholic Home
- Serve cinnamon rolls for breakfast.
- Read a book on St. Lucia.
- Make homemade hot cocoa in the evening and drive around and look at Christmas lights.
Do you have special St. Lucia day traditions? I’d love to hear about them!
