It still is.
But I keep getting back on the horse and that is what is important. It is always my #1 goal, so I find myself coming back around to it even if I’ve let the habit slip.
Life looks a bit different for me now than it was when I wrote that post back in 2017.
My baby will be turning 4 in July and I’m getting more uninterrupted sleep than I have in years.
But I still don’t like creeping around the house in the wee hours of the morning only to fall asleep during my prayer time. (That isn’t to say I don’t get up early. I just find prayer time first thing in the morning to not be giving God my best!)
Honestly, some of the sweetest times I’ve had with the Lord have been those nights that Husband passes out in 2 minutes flat and I’m left lying in bed wide awake. I’ll sneak out of bed, grab my Bible, and head to a cozy spot where I can just pray, read, and be with God without any worry of interruptions.
So, while I think morning prayer is wonderful, I really give God my best if my prayer can be a bit later in the day.
With that said, I would like to give you a peek at my quiet time with the Lord. I’m sharing it with the hopes that it might inspire some of you can find encouragement to get creative and make that precious and essential time with Jesus happen.
In this season of life, quiet time is happening for me after breakfast. After spiffing up the kitchen, the kids head off to do their morning chores and have a bit of play time before school starts.
I used to be a hard-nose about starting school promptly at 8:00 am, but I’ve become a bit more flexible so I can start my day with Jesus.
I find I need this time to enter into my homeschool day with a gentle spirit.
While the kids are doing chores and playing, I go to my room, make my bed (because I like to give it a good airing every morning before pulling up the covers) and then close the door.
Now for my time at the feet of Jesus.
Our priest said that, like Jesus, we must all find our mountain of solitude so that be can be with God. Going to my room has been my mountain.
I sit right in that rocking chair and pull my Bible, spiritual books, and journal from the basket by my nightstand. I save getting dressed for after prayers because there is something cozy and comfortable about sitting there with my coffee in my jammies.
I always start in God’s Word, because, if an interruption happens (yes, they still happen), I’ve at least gotten that in.
God’s Word
Currently, I am reading a Psalm, followed by a bit of an epistle (right now the Book of James), and bit of a gospel (The Gospel of St. John). The RSV is really my favorite translation.
My Catholic RSV Bible (I had a paperback version of the same translation that fell apart in the past 7 years but the leather bound is much sturdier!)
Spiritual Reading
In the morning, I’m reading from The Sinner’s Guide by Grenada.
You probably also see my favorite spiritual book on my nightstand: Introduction to the Devout Life. It is something I read to Husband right before we go to bed every evening. I love this book and I am constantly circling back to it.
Journaling
If there is time, if the Lord really speaks something to my heart that I want to remember, or if I’m in the mood, I will journal a bit.
And that is really it!
Keep being faithful mama! It truly is possibly. Pray that God would show you how you can make time with Him a reality.
He wants to give you His very self and the time you devout solely to Him will be richly rewarded.
