Hey all! We are gearing up for the feast of All Saints in our household lately – how about you? Here is a rundown of how we are simply celebrating this time of year. I’ll be back with more pictures of the actual celebrations in November, but I thought you may like to see what we are planning on this year. Make sure you read all the way to the bottom and enter the AWESOME giveaway!
2016 All Saints’ Day Celebrations
All Saints’ Day Costumes
We are blessed to be part of an amazing group of families that gets together for Little Flowers and Blue Knights. We also take some time to celebrate the liturgical calendar throughout the year. I think our co-op’s All Saints’ Day Party is a favorite for everyone involved. Here are the saints I’m taking with me to the party this year. (Spoiler Alert to all my friends reading this!)
Felix and the Spider
This costume duo was the idea of Jim. He adores little Butch and is happy to have him at his side this All Saints’. Our copy of Once Upon a Time Saints says St. Felix disguised himself as a beggar to escape the Roman officials, hence the beggar garb. You can read more about St. Felix here.
St. Felix Costume How-to: Brown hooded sweater (from Salvation Army) and rope belt.
Spider Costume How-to: The body was made from a red sweatshirt with “legs” from an old shirt sewn on. The head was a pair of red shorts I turned into a hat and hot glued white and black felt circles on to make eyes. I cut the web from white felt loosely following this tutorial.
St. Patrick
Apollo stuck to St. Patrick when deciding who he wanted to dress as for All Saints’. Lots of green makes this a fairly obvious costume!
St. Patrick Costume How-to: The bishop’s crosier or staff (I had to look up the official name) is the handle of a broom. His mitre was sewn from felt. The vestments were made from an old green tank top of mine that I cut down the sides and hot glued a white cross onto. Nothing fancy folks!
St. Lucia
If you’ve been a reader for awhile, you may notice that this is the same saint that Sally dressed as last All Saints’. I tried to convince her to try something new, but she insisted. I guess it meant less work for me!
St. Lucia Costume How-to: Sally is wearing a white undershirt of Husband’s along with a ribbon sash. Her crown is the same one I made last year from felt following the steps of the tutorial I made here: St. Lucia Crown DIY Tutorial.
All Saints’ Day Party
Now that we’ve got our costumes, we have to have someplace to go! Our co-op has been celebrating All Saints’ Day with a party the last 3 years, and it is always a real hit! We keep it super simple.
All Saint Party Games
Each family is asked to bring one All Saints’ Day Game. I also store games from previous parties, so the number of games to play goes up every year.
Saint Dorothy’s Bob-for-Apples
Last year, I wanted to work in Bobbing-for-Apples, so I incorporated St. Dorothy into this classic fall party game. St. Dorothy is known for sending fruit in the dead of winter as a sign that she was in heaven. It was a hit! This is one All Saints’ Game I haven’t seen yet on the web, so here is a printable sign for your All Saints’ Party if you want to play St. Dorothy’s Bob-for-Apples. The kid’s will love it so bring A LOT of apples.
Other games:
St. Francis Animal Toss:
Tape off a “free throw” line and let kids toss stuffed animals into a bucket. (You can see a fancy version of this at Catholic Playground here.)
Pin the Shamrock on St. Patrick:
Print off a picture of St. Patrick and hang it on the wall. Stick tape to the back of a paper shamrock. Let the kids take turns blindfolding themselves and attempting to “pin” the shamrock into St. Patrick’s hand.
Musical Saints: Tape pictures or names of saints on chairs and place the chairs in a circle. Have some music going and when the music stops kids are to find a seat. Whoever doesn’t find a seat is out. Keep pulling out a chair every round until there is only one left.
Saint to Symbol Match Game: Print the names of saints on index cards (one per card) and then draw or print for the computer a symbol associated with that saint. Let the kids take turns trying to pair the saint to their symbol. (e.g. St. Therese and roses, St. Peter and the Keys, St. Mark and the Lion, St. John and the eagle, etc.)
Coloring Table: Print off coloring pages of the saints and let kids take a break and color for awhile.
All Saints Party Treat Bags
Each family also brings a treat to distribute to each child. This is nothing fancy and can be whatever you happen to have in the house. Here are a few ideas.
All Saints’ Treat Bag Ideas:
- Cookies, crackers, etc.
- Candy
- Stickers
- Pencils, erasers
- Holy Cards (print some for free!)
While the kids play games, the moms pack a goody bag for each child to take home.
Doughnuts
We got into the tradition of making doughnuts or “soul cakes” several years ago. I pull out all the stops and make them from scratch. I use this recipe for Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts from All Recipes and it has always turned out well. It makes a bunch so we often share with friends, neighbors, or shut-ins. If you aren’t into making your own doughnuts, I won’t hold it against you for getting yours out of a box, BUT you are really missing out!
Maybe this year I’ll actually get a pictures taken of our doughnies before they are all gone!
If you want to know more about why we make doughnuts for All Saints’ Day check out my post on 16 Ways to Celebrate All Saints’ Day.
Holy Pumpkins
Our little ones love carving pumpkins. We always carve two sides, one for Halloween and another side for All Saints’. Our Halloween carving is usually a goofy grin and the reverse side is a simple icthus or cross. Sometimes we are really lazy and just paint them! Come November 2nd, our pumpkins are made into some delicious pumpkin pie!
If you are more talented than we are (which doesn’t say much about your artistic talent!), check out the Saint-O-Lanterns at Catholic Cuisine for some inspiration.
Moving into November
All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days are great ways to transition into the liturgical month of November which is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. I’m planning on gathering the November materials for the feast table (candles, pictures of our beloved deceased, etc.) and letting the kids help me make our feast table into a prayer table.
You’ll be seeing the November Feast Table post soon where you’ll find a booklist, activities, and other ideas for the month of November.
Don’t forget to check out 16 Ways to Celebrate All Saints’ Day if you need more ideas for All Saints’ Day in your home!
And now…the giveaway!
Leane of Catholic Child and Prayer Pillowcases contacted me after reading my October Feast Table post. She saw that not only was A Boy Who Became Pope: The Story of John Paul II on my Book Basket Wishlist for the month, but also that I was wanting to teach my little ones the Guardian Angel Prayer. She sent me a box filled with goodies for my family and some to share with one of you lucky readers!
My thoughts on A Boy Who Became Pope..
I was a little skeptical of this book when I first saw it. The illustrations are more cartoony than I like, but the children were immediately drawn to it and begged me to read it. As I read, I fell in love with not only the story, but the person of Saint John Paul II. I struggled to read the last few pages as I saw the culminating work of God’s hand in JPII’s life. God is so good! -and it brought a catch in my throat and a tear to my eye.
I grew up scoffing at this holy man (Lord, don’t smite me for that!), but over time I’ve been slowly introduced to his humility, bravery, wisdom, and love. This children’s book showed me the obstacles that were overcome by JPII even as a young boy. So often, I think saint stories are sugar-coated, leaving us feeling like we can never attain their holy perfection. A Boy Who Became Pope is blunt about the losses and struggles JPII faced, but also hopeful in how God worked through his suffering.
This is the type of story I want my children to read. This is a story that will inspire them toward holiness!
(The book is available on Catholic Child.)
Prayer Pillowcases..
I was also sent me a couple Prayer Pillowcases to try when she saw I was wanting to teach my 5 and 3 year old the Guardian Angel Prayer. The Prayer Pillowcases couldn’t have come at a better time considering I had totally blown off my resolution and done nothing to teach them this essential Catholic prayer!
There were so many pillowcases and colors, I had a hard time choosing. I chose the pink Guardian Angel Prayer Pillowcase for my girly-girl Sally and the St. Michael Pillowcase for Apollo (after all, what 5 year old boy isn’t crazy about St. Michael?). The kids were delighted to receive them and could barely wait for them to come out of the wash!
I have a feeling these Prayer Pillowcases are going to come in handy during those 2 a.m. nightmare episodes that rear their ugly head around our home on occasion. Husband and I often hand the frightened child a holy card or rosary to hold as they drift back to sleep. Now they will find comfort laying their head down on their angel prayers!
And working on memorizing that prayer?- it is a lot harder to forget my resolution now that it stares me in the face every night at 8 pm! The kids are picking it up both the St. Michael and the Guardian Angel prayers pretty quickly.
Christmas may be a long way off, but these seem to be the perfect gift for the Catholic kid who has it all! We all need a pillowcase, so why not make it Catholic? Did I mention they can be personalized?
Like I said, I also have some goodies for one of you lucky readers. I’m throwing in some of my own goodies to up-the-ante. Here is what you will get if you win this awesome giveaway!

My boys LOVE the book ‘Teach Me About the Catholic Faith”, plus all those little mini books on the stories of the Saint. I’ve also never seen those prayer pillow cases before – how neat!
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
I’m not familiar with that book, so I’ll have to check it out soon! Always on the lookout for another great Catholic read for kids. I had never seen the cute pillowcases before either!
Laura Range says
I LOVE The Weight of a Mass and Take It To the Queen…both books are analogy-type storytelling that speak beautiful truths about Mass and the Blessed Virgin Mary. 🙂 Gorgeous illustrations, too.

Ana Cabral says
My son is preparing for his first Reconciliation. I love the Act of Contrition and Guardian Angel prayer pillowcases. I have was taught as a young girl that these are very important good night prayers and I am trying to share that with my boys now as well. Thank you for your great work. You are a true inspiration. I do think that learning an Act of Contrition is so important. It is something we should say every day!

My favorite Catholic Kids book is Going to Confession by Fr. Lovasik. Its short enough to keep a second grader attention and teaches them a lot. I used with my older kids and my ccd classes.
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of Fr. Lovasik’s books, but I do enjoy some of them. I’ll have to see if I can borrow this one from our parish library!
Amy Garner says
It is hard to choose a favorite pillow case! I think I should have these pillow cases on all of our guest bedroom pillows, along with every other pillow we regularly use 🙂 I would first choose the Hail Mary because we are working hard with our children on our devotion to Jesus through Mary.
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
That would be clever to have them on every bed! I wonder what my protestant family would think of sleeping on a Hail Mary Pillow?????
Elizabeth says
The pillowcases are all so lovely, but I think my favorite is the Hail Mary Prayers. Such a beautiful part of our faith, and the first prayers for anyone to learn and memorize 🙂 I think they would not only be wonderful for children, but for adults too. Thanks for hosting an awesome giveaway!
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
Isn’t it a great idea! Best of luck!
Melanie A. says
We have been enjoying “A Catholic Child’s Illustrated Lives of the Saints.” As a former Protestant in the process of becoming Catholic, it has been very interesting for me to learn about the Saints right along with my children. We will have to grow our library of Catholic children’s books…I have a few in mind for Christmas gifts!
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
Our library has been growing slow here too, but I am amazed at what we have amassed since I joined the Church 5 years ago. Great X-mas and Saint Nicholas Day gifts!

It’s hard to pick a favorite Catholic children’s book, but I did really love Clare’s Costly Cookie. I read it to all my children as a read-aloud a while ago, and I thought it was a great example of specifically how to turn to the Lord in prayer for all our daily struggles.
I also really like the prayer pillowcases. I’ve admired them many times before, and I’m not sure I could pick a favorite of those either!
Your blog is great – I’ve been inspired many times reading your posts!
ellaclare85@yahoo.com says
Thanks, sweet Amanda. I’m glad you entered 🙂 I’ll be rooting for you! We have Clare’s Costly Cookie. However, I think I might need to read it again soon – might help with some of those tempers that have seemed to be flaring around these parts lately!

I just discovered your blog, and I love it! I’ve been looking for ideas for incorporating the liturgical year into our family prayer, and you have so many great ideas! Thanks for sharing! One of my favorite Catholic kids books is the Weight of a Mass. My favorite pillowcase is the Saint Joseph pillowcase.
